Care: Hermann’s tortoises are a hardy, terrestrial species that thrive in warm, dry environments with access to strong UVB lighting. They should be provided with a spacious enclosure featuring a deep, natural substrate suitable for digging, multiple hides, and a temperature gradient. A basking area should reach approximately 90–95°F, while cooler areas should remain around 70–80°F. UVB lighting is essential for proper shell and bone development.
Their diet should consist primarily of high-fiber leafy greens, grasses, weeds, and edible flowers. Foods such as dandelion greens, plantain weed, clover, endive, escarole, and hibiscus can provide variety. Fruit should generally be avoided or offered extremely rarely. Fresh water should always be available in a shallow, easily accessible dish.
