Care

• Enclosure: Juveniles do well in a shallow aquatic setup with abundant land areas, cork bark, leaf litter, and hiding places. Adults require a spacious paludarium or outdoor enclosure in warm climates with approximately 50–70% land and 30–50% shallow water. They are poor swimmers and need easy access in and out of the water.
• Temperature: Ambient 75–82°F (24–28°C), basking area 88–92°F (31–33°C), nighttime temperatures can safely drop to 72–75°F (22–24°C).
• Humidity: 75–95%. High humidity is essential to prevent dehydration and support healthy shell growth.
• Lighting: High-output UVB (T5 HO 10–12%) with a 12-hour day/night cycle and access to a warm basking area.
• Diet: Omnivorous. Feed dark leafy greens, mushrooms, squash, carrots, berries, figs, bananas, earthworms, snails, insects, and occasional high-quality turtle pellets. Juveniles are generally more carnivorous, while adults consume more plant matter.

Facts

• Native to Southeast Asia, where they inhabit humid tropical rainforests near slow-moving streams and forest pools.
• Juveniles have dramatic, pointed shell spines that help deter predators. These spines gradually become less pronounced as the turtle matures.
• Despite being semi-aquatic, they spend much of their time on land and should not be housed like fully aquatic turtles.
