Care:
Russian tortoises are hardy, active tortoises that thrive in spacious, dry enclosures with plenty of room to roam and dig. They require strong UVB lighting, a warm basking area of 95–100°F, and a cooler side around 75–80°F. Their diet should consist primarily of grasses, weeds, and leafy greens, with very little fruit or high-protein foods.
Facts:
Female Russian tortoises are typically larger than males and develop a broader, more rounded shell to accommodate egg production. They are well known for their friendly personalities, curiosity, and long lifespan, often living 40–50 years or more with proper care. Native to the arid grasslands and deserts of Central Asia, they are excellent burrowers and enjoy digging to regulate their body temperature and feel secure.
