Colorado River Toads require a spacious, secure enclosure with a deep substrate suitable for burrowing, as they spend much of their time underground. Maintain daytime temperatures between 75–85°F with a slight nighttime drop, and provide a shallow water dish large enough for soaking. Moderate humidity with periodic misting is beneficial, especially during shedding. Feed a varied diet of appropriately sized insects such as crickets, roaches, hornworms, and earthworms, dusted regularly with calcium and vitamin supplements.

Also known as the Sonoran Desert Toad, the Colorado River Toad is one of the largest native toads in North America. It is a nocturnal species that becomes most active during the summer monsoon season. This hardy amphibian is known for its distinctive olive-green coloration and prominent parotoid glands behind the eyes. Like many toads, it secretes defensive toxins when threatened, so it should always be handled minimally and hands should be washed after contact. With proper care, Colorado River Toads can live for well over a decade in captivity.
