Care:
Russian tortoises are hardy, active tortoises that thrive in dry, arid environments with plenty of space to roam and dig. Provide a minimum 4’ × 8’ enclosure for adults, with a deep substrate suitable for burrowing. Maintain a warm basking spot of 95–100°F, an ambient temperature of 75–85°F, and nighttime temperatures above 65°F. Humidity should remain between 30–50%, with a humid hide available to support healthy shell growth. Feed a diet consisting primarily of grasses, weeds, and leafy greens, while avoiding fruit and high-protein foods. Always provide fresh water and access to UVB lighting or natural sunlight.
Facts:
- Females are typically larger and rounder than males, with a shorter tail and a flatter plastron.
- Russian tortoises are excellent diggers and can create surprisingly deep burrows, making secure enclosures essential.
- With proper care, they commonly live 50+ years, making them a long-term companion.
