Care

  • Enclosure: Indoor adults should have at least an 8’ × 4’ enclosure, while outdoor housing is ideal in warm climates. Provide a humid hide, deep substrate for digging, and plenty of shelter.
  • Temperature: Ambient 75–85°F (24–29°C), basking spot 90–95°F (32–35°C), nighttime temperatures should remain above 70°F (21°C).
  • Humidity: 70–90%, especially for juveniles, to promote healthy shell growth and prevent pyramiding.
  • Lighting: High-quality UVB lighting (10–12%) and a basking lamp are required if housed indoors.
  • Diet: Primarily leafy greens, weeds, flowers, vegetables, mushrooms, and a variety of fruits in moderation. Unlike many tortoises, they also benefit from occasional animal protein such as earthworms, snails, or a high-quality tortoise diet.
  • Behavior: Friendly, curious, and generally outgoing. They often recognize their keepers and are active foragers throughout the day.

Facts

  • Native to northern and central South America, including Brazil, Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana, Paraguay, and surrounding regions.
  • Their bright red, orange, or yellow scales on the legs and head give them their common name.
  • Red-footed tortoises thrive in tropical forests and savannas, making them one of the few tortoise species that naturally consumes fruit and occasional animal protein.
